“You can judge a society by how well it treats its prisoners.” (Dostoyevsky, The House of the Dead)
The relationship a prisoner has with our legal system does not stop after being sentenced. There are 14 prisons currently operating in Ireland with the reality that prison conditions can vary between one prison and another. No matter the prison, nor the crime for which a prisoner has been sentenced, we are in a position to offer our advice and services. We fully endorse the following comment of Edwards J. in the decision of Devoy v Governor of Portlaoise Prison
“…among the residual constitutional rights of a prisoner which are not abrogated or suspended is the right to be treated humanely and with human dignity.”
At McIntyre O’Brien Solicitors, we can advise and represent prisoners in respect of the following prison law matters:
1. Access to Justice and Appeals;
2. The safeguarding and protecting of of prisoner’s rights;
3. Pursuing worthy claims on behalf of prisoners, including personal injury claims*, slopping out claims, inhuman or degrading treatment claims, rights to education, health and religion etc;
4. Where possible, the bringing of mandamus, habeas corpus or bail applications.
Advice and claims on behalf of prisoners in respect of remission, release, transfers or deportation orders.
At McIntyre O’Brien Solicitors, we have a simple outlook which is never to forget, no matter the crime, that a prisoner does not stop being a human being and the loss of liberty does not mean the loss of all rights.
